Ranee has been hairdressing since 1983. For over four decades she has continued in ongoing education, continuous improvement, professional development, and built a reputation in Adelaide that brings clients through the door from across the city and beyond.

In 2006 she opened Jarnell Cut Colour Curl, and what began as a full-service salon has grown into something more specific…

After decades in the industry, Ranee discovered her own hair was curly
Seeing many industry fads over the years, Ranee was wary and resisted embracing the bespoke cutting, colouring, hydration and styling techniques which have changed her outlook on caring for curly hair and her business.
It wasn’t until she tried these techniques and products on her own hair that she realized that what she thought was fluffy and sometimes frizzy hair, was actually just a plump, juicy curl waiting to be treated differently – very differently to the way hairdressers are taught to care for curly hair!
So, despite thousands of dollars worth of professional training, she invested in specialised training for herself and her team with some incredibly talented, Curly Cutting educators who have trained with the founder of the Curly Girl phenomenon and other international Curl educators.
Clever Curl, LOHY, Keune & Amika have generously shared their educators, talents and time creating specific curl friendly products to support their training and raising up a new generation of capable Curl Queens & Curl Coaches.
Each of our brand partners are committed to producing ethical products with beautiful, predominantly natural and vegan friendly ingredients and essential oils with Keune being a certified B Corporation company meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.
For decades, the hair industry simply has not known how to work with curls. Clients arrived at salons, had their hair shampooed, blow-dried straight, flat ironed, cut straight and were sent home without a word of guidance.
When they next shampooed their hair, the result never looked right, because curly hair is best when cut at the right point on each individual curl, one curl at a time, in its natural curl state, dry.
So that’s what our clients say we do… No brushes, no combs, just your curls, a pair of scissors and our magic hands…
The training being taught in apprenticeships was dated. The techniques were wrong. Most hairdressers were doing their best with what they had been taught, and what they had been taught was lacking.
Ranee has spent years trying to change that. As a board member of the hairdressing industry association, she has actively advocated for reform to the National Training Package for our apprentices. The standards are finally catching up.
Jarnell Cut Colour Curl have been recognised as Curly Hair Specialists for a very long time with some our clients being faithful for over 40 years!
A true consultation...
Industry research shows that around 80% of hairdressers report consulting every client yet only 7% of clients believe they actually receive one.
Ranee heard that statistic through her industry association, and it confirmed what she had long suspected: standing behind the chair, looking at a reflection in a mirror and asking, “What do you want today?” is NOT a consultation.
At Jarnell Cut Colour Curl, the consultation happens well before we begin. When you book with us, we send a Pre-Consultation Form and encourage you to sit with a coffee for 5 minutes and complete the predominantly multiple choice form to give us insight into your hair goals, history, lifestyle and routine. We have offered this service for years! This valuable Form helps us to delve deeper into solving your hair and scalp problems on the day of your visit.
Then, we sit down, face to face, we ask questions and we listen. The Pre Consultation Form helps us get to the nitty gritty effectively and efficiently – your hair goals, texture, colour history, daily routine and lifestyle, are all considered before a single decision is made. Only then will we give you options on how to achieve your hair goals and plan the journey ahead!
Your personal prescription
Every client is given free education on what we use in their hair and how we use it, from products, to brushes, diffusers and accessories with our Curly Cut, Hydration & Style clients receiving their own personal prescription covering the specific products used, the exact amounts, the full wash-day process, and guidance on managing your hair on day two, three, and four. Your personal Prescription is not a generic brochure. It is written for your hair specifically and is yours take home so you can achieve the same results consistently at home and watch the condition of your curls / hair improve with every shampoo.

Passionate about training and continuous improvement
- Ranee began her Hairdressing journey as a Salon Assistant in 1983, commenced an apprenticeship in 1986, and after too many certificates and qualifications to mention, now holds qualifications in Hairdressing, Business and Education, and is an International Colour Master with Keune – with this qualification completed in London.
- Jarnell Cut Colour Curl is a Keune Colour Expert Salon, an internationally recognised accreditation that requires active, ongoing training across the full team. We specialise in bespoke blondeing, grey blending, on trend fashion colouring, balayage, lived in blondes, grey coverage, and anything to do with colour – and cutting for that matter. We are trained cutters who also specialise in Pixie and Bixie cuts, Bobs, Short hair, long hair, razoring, texturising, blunt cutting – you name it, we can do it!
- Jarnell Cut Colour Curl are stockists of Keune, Clever Curl, LOHY and Amika – four curl friendly and approved, largely vegan and organic product ranges, plus we have an in-salon Clever Curl Refill Station (15% off RRP) and refills are available for many of our other products also.
- Filtration systems are fitted to salon basins to remove hard water minerals before any colour service and we have other products available for mineral damage and discoloration.
- Ranee has served for many years on the board of the SA Hair & Beauty industry association (SAHBA) and has advocated for national curl training reform and other industry changes.
- We are members of the South Australian Hair & Beauty Association (SAHBA) which advocates for raising industry standards and upholding and protecting the value of our Qualification and legislated Hairdressers Act – the Award.
- We invest and believe in our dedicated team who attend external education events, including annual interstate training in Sydney.
- We regularly host training in salon with our brand partners and peers, utilise our in salon educators and have guest educators visit the salon throughout the year.
- We take sustainability seriously and look after our Earth with these and many other practices – just ask us!
Meet the team
Ranee’s approach to training her team follows the same principle as her approach to clients: no shortcuts, no assumptions, no generic answers. Every team member receives one-on-one in-salon training, attends external education, and is expected to be capable of handling whatever walks through the door. They know your name. They remember the conversation from your last visit. Each appointment builds on the one before.

Meet Nikki our Salon Co-Ordinator, Senior Stylist, Colourist & Blonde Technician, Seamless 1 Tape Hair Extension Specialist and recently recognised Clever Curl – Curly Cutting & Hydration Queen.
As a wife & mother of two with her own experience in salon ownership as a Hairdresser, Colourist, Hair Extension Specialist, and Beautician, her high level of client care and attention to detail make her a cherished member of our team and a hot favourite with every client who meets her!
Nikki is usually responsible for our social media, enjoys exploring South Australia on weekends with her family and friends, makes the best Hot Chocolate (with marshmallows and a snnaccident, of course) loves a good Braai with boerewors, her favourite tea is Rooibos and she speaks Afrikaans too!

Meet Emily, our Emerging Stylist – she has a Certificate 2 as a Salon Assistant and is currently completing her Certificate 3 in Hairdressing.
Emily gives a delightful shampoo and scalp massage, is a qualified barista (so you really want her preparing your cappuccino, latte or flat white), is our colour, blowdrying, mens and kids cutting princess and our Clever Curl & LOHY Curl Hydration and Styling Coach.
Em loves embracing all things hair in her training, appreciates anything Port Power or Spiderman themed and although she’s a a sucker for gummy bears or hot Afghan bread on a busy salon day, she makes her own home made salad for lunch most days!
